A background check is the process of looking up public records, commercial records, financial records, and other information about a person. A background check is typically performed on someone wishing to purchase handguns from licensed firearms dealers (under the Brady Bill) or on those wishing to work in positions with special security concerns, such as trucking, ports of entry, and airline transportation, or careers involving the elderly, disabled, and children. A background check may also be performed to confirm information on an employment application or resume.
